First and Best.

In case you don't know, I will remind you that Yellowstone National Park was the first National Park established in the US.  It's motto is "First and Best."

I guess depending upon your perspective, you might have a dispute about the "Best" part of the brand. Being as I have always wanted to visit this park, I had high expectations. I have not been disappointed. I am sure that there are those naturalists and adventurers that want to head out into the woods and not see another soul for days. If that is the case, this may or may not be your park...depending upon whether you can weather the crowds until you head to the back country.

Certainly there are a lot of people here already, and the season is still young here in Yellowstone. This is just a guess, but I think there are probably less folks here at the north entrance than there are at other areas of the park.  Just during our drive from the north down to Old Faithful and pass the West Entrance we seemed to encounter additional crowds. But you know what? People don't bother me. The park is big enough (2.2 million acres) for all of us. And it really is about what you make of your own experience.

And our experience has been great! When you enter the park (with kids), the Rangers give you a brochure about what kind of wildlife you might encounter.  We have seen nearly everything on the list, including bears, elk, bison, osprey, big-horned sheep, deer, and geese. Last night, we entered  the park for the first time in the evening and saw new life:

This newborn elk was just hours old and trying out its wobbly legs.

Today we headed down to Old Faithful. A must-see while at the park...but honestly, there are some other sites which are a bit more impressive and beautiful.

As you head south from Mammoth Hot Springs, you cross some high country.

As you enter Norris Geyser Basin.

Fun Facts From Today:
Our big milestone for the day was logging more than 3000 miles driven on the trip.
Total cost of gas to date = $566.18.

  1. I hear you can fart there and no one will notice. Is that why you decided to visit there? Hmm. That's very telling.
